Nieuwe GPU speciaal voor inference
Intel heeft zijn nieuwste datacenter-GPU onthuld onder de codenaam Crescent Island. Dit apparaat is niet bedoeld voor het trainen van AI-modellen, maar voor inference — het uitvoeren van voorspellingen met reeds getrainde modellen.
De chip is gebouwd op de Xe3P-architectuur en wordt uitgerust met maar liefst 160 GB LPDDR5X-geheugen. Hiermee mikt Intel op energie-efficiëntie en kosteneffectiviteit, idealiter voor datacenters met luchtkoeling in plaats van vloeistofkoeling.

Wanneer komt ‘ie beschikbaar?
Intel kondigt aan dat klanten vanaf de tweede helft van 2026 toegang krijgen tot proefversies van Crescent Island. Dit moment markeert Intel’s hernieuwde poging om serieus mee te doen in de fel competitieve markt voor AI-chips.

Waarom deze stap?
Na mislukte pogingen met eerdere GPU-lijnen wil Intel met Crescent Island een duurzame strategie presenteren. De focus ligt expliciet op inference — het stadium waarin AI-modellen in de praktijk worden gebruikt, niet geworteld in het trainen. Daarnaast stelt Intel in zijn plannen dat toekomstige AI-datacenterchips jaarlijks gelanceerd moeten worden, om bij te blijven met concurrenten.

Risico’s & uitdagingen
Een kernvraag is of Intel het software-ecosysteem snel genoeg kan opbouwen om ontwikkelaars aan te trekken. Nvidia heeft decennia lang zijn CUDA-platform geperfectioneerd; Intel moet op dat vlak terrein winnen.Bovendien is de timing strategisch gevoelig — concurrenten hebben al sterke posities in AI-versnellingstechnologieën.
Wat betekent dit voor de markt?
Met Crescent Island duikt Intel opnieuw de ring in tegenover spelers als Nvidia en AMD. Indien het slaagt, kan Intel zich positioneren als alternatief voor organisaties die minder afhangen van de gevestigde GPU-reuzen en open, modulairere AI-infrastructuren willen.
